Ida Pedanda Gede Made Gunung has, lately, been much discussed amongst Hindus. This prominent Hindu leader is assessed, by many people, to have a forward thinking approach, skilled in "translating" the philosophy of the Hindu religion, with a clear and straightforward language and sense of humor. Ida Pedanda Gede Made Gunung was born in Gria Gede Purnawati Kemenuh, Blahbatuh, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia. Not surprisingly, Ida Pedanda Gede Made Gunung often appears in different media, both electronic and printed media, to give dharma talks to the Hindu community of Bali and Indonesia as a whole. He has also made many visits to holy places of interest in India and Indonesia. After completing primary school (1965) in Blahbatuh and SMP (1968) in Gianyar, he then continued his education to the State Teachers Top (1971) in Sukawati. He then worked as a Field Officer for Family Planning, Gianyar (1972-1974). He became a primary school teacher in Ubud (1975-1983) and hereinafter moved to SD 7 Saba (1987-1994). In 1992 he was ranked as the ideal teacher and best example for Blahbatuh. On the sidelines of teaching, he continued his education at the Institute of Hindu Dharma (IHD) to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in 1986. He underwent the ceremony into Hindu Priesthood to become a Pedanda in 1994 and from 2002 to the present he has been ranked an extraordinary lecturer at the Usada Faculty at Hindu University of Indonesia, called IHD now. In addition, he has also been active in other organizations since the late 1960's. Ratu was active, in the field of sport, as a volleyball player; selected for PON Bali as a karate coach (black belt). He was active, for the religious organizations, in the Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI) Blahbatuh district, Gianyar PHDI (1989-1994) PHDI Bali (1994-2001) and the Parisada Dharma Hindu Bali (PDHB) (2001-2006).
Notes on Ida Pedanda Gede Made Gunung’s life before entering the Hindu Priesthood; Two years before entering The Hindu Priesthood, Ida Pedanda Gede Made Gunung began to reorganize patterns of thought, word and deed, in preparation for entering the priesthood. One day, about 4 months before the ceremony, he went to visit Sanglah Hospital to see how people were treated there. He wanted to feel the condition and suffering of those who were sick. He went to visit the ER, from one ward to another, until ending up at the morgue. Following Sanglah, he visited Hospital Wangaya for the same purpose. Additionally, he visited the supermarkets, to see what people and their children were eating. In the supermarkets, he was followed by security guards, who felt a little awkward because they spotted this bearded, long-haired, headband-wearing man, visiting a place like that, with no apparent purpose. He did not visit any discos or other entertainment places, as to visit such a place, one must pay in advance. Following this, he went on a trip to the bird market, listened to the birds chirping and saw the different types of pets that are sold there. Besides this, he also helped and followed truck drivers who were driving their trucks, bringing sand from Klungkung to other areas of Bali. He did this to know what it felt like to be a truck driver. After he had enough experiences, he began to develop programs to Tangkil (meet) the Wiku (Hindu high priests) here in Bali. In his diary, he records to have met with 325 Holy Men in Bali.
Why would he do all this? Ida Pedanda Gede Made Gunung said that all these experiences were a mental preparation to enter priesthood. As the designer of a building, before starting to build, one needs to look at the various models of existing buildings, as a comparison in the planning of the new building. Suitable elements would be copied, the less suitable reduced and so on. As it turns out, all these experiences have become a great foundation to support the work and tasks that a Hindu High Priest is faced with. As a simple example, Ida Pedanda Gede Made Gunung must face a lot of people who come for advice. There are people of the subtle kind and sometimes the emotional kind. All must be dealt with patiently, not faced with violence (as a karate coach in the past.) Now he hits, but does not use physical blows, only spiritual punches. Levels of spirituality work well if supported by a wide variety of experiences, a strong mind and a healthy body.
Yadnya ceremonies are done only if there are people in need of them. If someone comes for a certain yadnya ceremony, The Ratu will accept, but if no one should come, that is also acceptable. As with a flow of water, whether or not people come to take the waters, the water will still be flowing.
